The Handmade Music School presents a beginners Old Time Bass Workshop with Andrew Small on Saturday, May 18, 2019 from 3:00-5:00pm. Cost is $30.

This workshop for all levels will address the fundamental techniques and musical considerations necessary to produce solid and supportive bass playing. Topics to be discussed include common keys, timing, and the use of functional bass lines. We will also cover technical issues on the double bass as well as the role of the bass within an ensemble. Bring your own questions about bass playing and we will dive in. If you have friends, or a significant other, who plays old time music and you are tired of endlessly listening and not being part of the fun, this workshop is for you!

Multi-instrumentalist Andrew Small holds a Masters Degree in Double Bass Performance from Yale University and has performed with artists ranging from Sierra Hull to the North Carolina Symphony. A native of Eastern North Carolina, Andrew now lives in Floyd, VA where he serves as director of the Handmade Music School at the Floyd Country Store and also performs as bassist with the touring group Bill and the Belles. Winning the blue ribbon in the bass contest at the Mt Airy Fiddler’s Convention in 2012, Andrew has also won numerous blue ribbons from fiddler’s conventions around the Southeast for his old-time fiddling.

Several basses will be here at the Floyd Country Store. If you have a bass bring it, if not, you can use one of ours and see if its the instrument for you!
