The Handmade Music School and Southern Mountain Melodies are offering a Music of Our Mountains Workshop with Mac Traynham, Jenny Traynham, and Andy Buckman on Saturday, November 10, 2018 from 9:30 am – 4:00 pm.
This is an all day group lesson for intermediate fiddle, intermediate clawhammer banjo, and intermediate back-up guitar. Students will learn some “local” tunes in a danceable style that is what the Sunday Jam and Friday Night Jamboree are all about.
We will meet as a large group around 9:30 am and demo a couple of tunes that we will teach during the break out session. We meet again to try the tunes as a large group, then have lunch provided by the store from 12:30 – 1:30pm. After lunch we will meet again as a large group, change key and demo our version of another tune or two from the CD (included), and break out again. At the end of the day all students will come together for a final jam.
Cost is $75 before through November 4 or $85 November 5-10. Cost includes lunch at the Floyd Country Store and Handmade Music School CD.
Mac Traynham: advanced/intermediate old-time fiddle. For those players who know several tunes but desire to play on a higher level for dancing. Tunes with interesting melody that employ basic bowing patterns will be taught. Students will learn what it takes to play well in coordination with banjo players who use rhythmic clawhammer banjo techniques.
Andy Buckman: advanced/intermediate old-time banjo. Students will learn to play the same tunes as the fiddle students in a basic clawhammer style using fundamental right and left hand techniques. Playing up to speed with a full sound will be emphasized.
Jenny Traynham: old-time guitar. For those players who can easily change basic chords and have a desire to enhance their general back-up playing skills. Interesting bass runs and other techniques will be taught.
