The Handmade Music School presents an Intermediate Round Peak Clawhammer Banjo Workshop with Adam Hurt on Thursday, April 25, 2019 from 5:30-8:00pm. Workshop participants should have a good working knowledge of the basics of the clawhammer style, including drop-thumbing, and be comfortable playing in multiple tunings. All material will be taught by ear in the traditional manner, so the use of recording devices is highly recommended.
The Handmade Music School is offering a series of one-hour afternoon workshops as part of the Floyd County Old Time Music Get-Together on Friday, March 16 and Saturday, March 17, 2018, at the the Floyd EcoVillage in Floyd County, Virginia. Workshops include intermediate and advanced classes in fiddle, banjo, guitar, dance, and singing. We are opening these workshops to the public. Pre-registration is required. Cost is $25 per workshop.

Enjoy a full day of in-depth instruction from the legendary Alice Gerrard. This vocal workshop will begin by delving into the stories and voices of the musicians and culture that paved the way for the traditional music of today. We will then apply that knowledge while learning tunes and songs with an emphasis on style.
The Handmade Music School presents a bass workshop with Missy Raines on Thursday, November 29, 2018 from 3:00-4:30pm. Join Missy for an intensive 90 minute bass workshop. We’ll cover some basic fundamentals including right hand technique, left hand technique, getting good tone, and keeping good time. We’ll hone our ear training skills a little and unlock the number system while playing a new song or two. We’ll also discuss the important role of the bass in a bluegrass band and how to be the best support player you can be. All levels welcome. Bring your instrument.
The Handmade Music School presents a songwriters workshop with Jeff McClellan and Scott Patrick on Saturday, November 17, 2018 from 3:00-5:00pm. This workshop is for developing songwriters at any level. Hit Songwriter Jeff McClellan & Producer/Arranger Scott Patrick are teaming up to provide brief look at all aspects of songwriting. We will have three main components: lyric & arrangement, PRO's & Publishing, Demo & Song Pitch Etiquette and decide as a group what to spend most of our time working on.
The Handmade Music School presents an intermediate/advanced guitar workshop with Trevor McKenzie - All About Those Bass (Runs) on Saturday, November 3, 2018 from 3:00-5:00pm. This workshop will focus on developing thundering bass runs and driving rhythm on guitar in a string band setting, behind fiddle/banjo, and singing. We will take inspiration from elder string band and solo guitar players from the southwest Virginia/western North Carolina area. Attention will be paid to placing bass runs around tune melodies and using the guitar to provide a steady rhythm as well as drive/interplay with other instruments. Teaching will be predominantly by ear, however, recording is encouraged and time will be taken to break down runs and melodies.
The Handmade Music School presents an Intermediate Live Sound Workshop Series with Joseph DeJarnette of Studio808A/Turn It Down Sound. Workshop dates are Tuesdays September 4 (beginners), October 2 (Intermediate), and December 4 (Advanced) from 6pm-8pm. This intermediate workshop is designed for folks who already know how to set-up and run a small PA, but are looking to become more familiar with fine tuning a system for the best possible sound using whatever gear and space is available. This session will also be useful for musicians looking to communicate better with professional sound engineers, or to tweak their own sound at small gigs.
The Handmade Music School presents an intermediate banjo workshop with Jared Boyd on Saturday, September 29, 2018 from 3:00-5:00pm. Cost is $30. This workshop will focus on a few Round Peak/Galax area tunes, as well as some clawhammer techniques and licks you can add to your playing to give it more character/variety. We will go through tunes phrase by phrase at a moderate pace so as to get in as many tunes as possible. Attendees are expected to be able to learn by ear or by watching, as no tablature or written notation will be provided.

Born in Macon, GA, Carl presently lives in Galax, VA. He is widely respected for his instrumental talents and original songs about the joys and tribulations of day-to-day life in the South. Carl’s songs have been recorded by The Nashville Bluegrass Band, Kate Campbell, Rickie Simpkins with Tony Rice, and others.
Join the Handmade Music School for an intermediate fiddle workshop with Erynn Marshall on Sunday, September 23, 2018 from 11:00am-1:00pm. This class will delve into southern style fiddling. The secrets of bowing, left hand techniques, and playing more effortlessly will all be explored as well as getting that “old-time sound.” We’ll learn a great tune, and about the traditional fiddler it came from. The Handmade Music School presents a special fiddle workshop with Eddie Bond on Saturday, September 15, 2018 from 3:00-5:00pm. Learn fiddle in the old-time way, phrase by phrase from with one of the most respected fiddlers in the Blue Ridge Mountain region. Eddie will teach Roundpeak/Galax style tunes with attention to bowing. Eddie Bond grew up in Fries, Virginia, where the fiddle and banjo are still welded in a Virginia dance tradition. Eddie is the fiddler and lead singer in the New Ballards Branch Bogtrotters, and is the winner of many fiddle contests, including the Galax Old Fiddlers’ Convention.
