Floyd County Old Time Music Get-Together

The Handmade Music School, along with The Floyd Country Store, is excited to announce the Second Annual Floyd County Old Time Music Get-Together at the beautiful EcoVillage in Floyd County, Virginia! This amazing four day camp will take place in early spring on March 14 – 17, 2019. Instructors include Alice Gerrard, Elizabeth LaPrelle, Jere Canote, Greg Canote, Kilby Spencer, Emily Spencer, Becky Hill Mac Traynham, and Andy Buckman.

Beginners Ukulele with Ash Devine

The Handmade Music School presents a beginners ukulele workshop with Ash Devine on Saturday December 29, 2018 from 1:00-3:00pm. This workshop is for developing songwriters at any level. Cost is $65 with a new ukulele, $30 for workshop only. This is a family-friendly, kid-friendly workshop priced with a ukulele. It is a perfect gift and activity for the Holiday vacation week! Those interested can purchase the Ukulele and wrap it up for a loved one, and receive a gift certificate for the Workshop, or receive a gift certificate for both the instrument and the workshop to be picked up on December 29th.

Intermediate/Advanced Fiddle Workshop with Earl White

The Floyd Country Store’s Handmade Music School is offering a Fiddle Workshop with Earl White on Saturday, Saturday December 15, 2018 from 3pm-5pm. This class is all about having fun while enhancing and fine tuning your skills to help you move from intermediate to advanced. We will explore and focus on bowing techniques that will help you get that “old time” sound, while building your repertoire with tunes in various keys. Bring recorders! Let’s play.  Cost is $30.

Bass Workshop with Missy Raines

The Handmade Music School presents a bass workshop with Missy Raines on Thursday, November 29, 2018 from 3:00-4:30pm. Join Missy for an intensive 90 minute bass workshop. We’ll cover some basic fundamentals including right hand technique, left hand technique, getting good tone, and keeping good time. We’ll hone our ear training skills a little and unlock the number system while playing a new song or two. We’ll also discuss the important role of the bass in a bluegrass band and how to be the best support player you can be. All levels welcome. Bring your instrument.

The Handmade Music School presents a songwriters workshop with Jeff McClellan and Scott Patrick on Saturday, November 17, 2018 from 3:00-5:00pm. This workshop is for developing songwriters at any level. Hit Songwriter Jeff McClellan & Producer/Arranger Scott Patrick are teaming up to provide brief look at all aspects of songwriting.  We will have three main components: lyric & arrangement, PRO's & Publishing, Demo & Song Pitch Etiquette and decide as a group what to spend most of our time working on.

Music of Our Mountains One Day Workshop

The Handmade Music School and Southern Mountain Melodies are offering a Music of Our Mountains Workshop with Mac Traynham, Jenny Traynham, and Andy Buckman on Saturday, November 10, 2018 from 9:30 am – 4:00 pm. This is an all day group lesson for intermediate fiddle, intermediate clawhammer banjo, and intermediate back-up guitar. Students will learn some "local" tunes in a danceable style that is what the Sunday Jam and Friday Night Jamboree are all about.

Intermediate Banjo Workshop with Jared Boyd

The Handmade Music School presents an intermediate banjo workshop with Jared Boyd on Saturday, September 29, 2018 from 3:00-5:00pm. Cost is $30. This workshop will focus on a few Round Peak/Galax area tunes, as well as some clawhammer techniques and licks you can add to your playing to give it more character/variety. We will go through tunes phrase by phrase at a moderate pace so as to get in as many tunes as possible. Attendees are expected to be able to learn by ear or by watching, as no tablature or written notation will be provided.

Intermediate Fiddle Workshop with Eddie Bond

The Handmade Music School presents a special fiddle workshop with Eddie Bond on Saturday, September 15, 2018 from 3:00-5:00pm. Learn fiddle in the old-time way, phrase by phrase from with one of the most respected fiddlers in the Blue Ridge Mountain region. Eddie will teach Roundpeak/Galax style tunes with attention to bowing. Eddie Bond grew up in Fries, Virginia, where the fiddle and banjo are still welded in a Virginia dance tradition. Eddie is the fiddler and lead singer in the New Ballards Branch Bogtrotters, and is the winner of many fiddle contests, including the Galax Old Fiddlers’ Convention.

Bluegrass Improvisation Workshop with Abe Goorskey and Scott Patrick

Join us on Saturday, September 1, 2018 from 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm for an Introduction to Improvisation in Bluegrass (Guitar & Mandolin) with Abe Goorskey and Scott Patrick. Abe Goorskey and Scott Patrick will provide a brief introduction of how improvisation applies to bluegrass music and show you how to incorporate improvisational playing into your song repertoire. Using mandolin and guitar, Scott and Abe will discuss melodic and improvised approaches to songs and tunes, and how to use both approaches with ease.
